No doubt about it, summer is here. The time of year when the thought of wearing less can find you in a state of shear panic and down right disappointment. You know that you have been working hard in the gym, but when you look in the mirror, the negative self-talk kicks in insisting,  “I just need to lose that last 10 pounds.”

Your next thought is one I want to permanently eliminate from this conversation.  “I need to eat less and exercise more,” those words are quite possibly the most self-destructive words ever been spoken or thought for that matter.

I know a better way, and I want to share it with you now, before you take a giant step backwards. Believe me when I tell you that the real key to weight loss is to eat more and take time to rest.  I know because I have been that person in the mirror.

Yes, you heard me, and I know exactly what you are thinking, but wipe away any doubt, fear and anxiety that’s surfacing and let me explain.  I’ve been there, eating minimal amounts of “healthy food” – little meals six times a day and never being satisfied always hungry with no energy to exercise.  Listen up because this is how I changed things up!

Eat More: protein and fat

I am not telling you to add protein and fat to an already bad diet, let’s get that straight right off the bat!

I am telling you to add more protein and fat to a REAL FOOD diet.  Eating bigger meals and grazing less throughout the day will result in greater fat loss, and building these meals with healthy proteins and fats will allow you to accomplish this without ever feeling hungry.

Every meal should include a rich variety of foods that will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to perform. Your local farmer’s market is a great place to find grass fed and pastured animal proteins and sustainable seafood, as well as the rich variety of vegetables needed to round out your meals.

Don’t forget your fats. Sprinkle good fats from oils, olives, avocado and nuts to top off your meal.  Use them to make the marinades and dressings that add flavor to your meals. The combination of quality proteins and fats is the key to being satisfied and the feeling of satiety.

Take Time To Rest:

You all know that I love to see your smiling faces, and love to train every single one of you … but not everyday.  Take a rest day and recover, and by that I mean more then just not coming into MADabolic Inc.

I also don’t mean lying on the couch with a bag of chips and a cold beer, or staying out all night “socializing” and sleeping the next morning away.

I do mean truly resting and letting your body fully recover. I’m talking about active rest.

Take a deep stretch class at your favorite yoga studio or spend some time hiking, jogging or evening walking. Lower intensity movements like these allow your body to repair itself and truly recover.

Sleeping is perhaps the single most important part to a full recovery.  When you are stressed and sleep deprived, the body produces the hormone cortisol. This particular hormone actually makes you hold on to fat, and store it right around your abdominal area.  You definitely don’t want that to happen!  Get your 8 hours of sleep and let your body relax that abdominal fat away.

And closest to my heart Nutrition …

Keep up with your nutrition – especially during your rest days. View your food intake as medicine for a body in recovery.  Your food choices are the building blocks that will construct the lean and defined shape that you are searching for in the mirror.

Eat more and take time to rest, and you will never have to worry about “The Last Ten Pounds” ever again.
