MADlifestyle Check In: Client Tyler Wichmann

Prior to joining MADabolic I was an avid triathlete. I was constantly training for several hours a day, 7 days a week. I found that I was always tired and that redundantly doing a routine of swimming, biking, and running prevented me from pursuing other interests. Further, I was constantly trying to replenish the calories that I was burning and was trying to do so with “less-than-ideal” foods that were dense in calories. After doing an Ironman, I was really burnt out and was looking to try something new. After doing all of this intense training I felt that I was getting away from the whole point of exercising…to be healthy. The MADabolic lifestyle (MADlifestyle) really embodies who I strive to be. It doesn’t expect perfection but it attempts to pursue a better, more balanced lifestyle.

I found MADabolic while looking for something to change up my routine. I searched for local gyms in the area and I found that my choices were limited to a traditional gym or a cross-fit gym. Neither of these really offered me what I was looking for. I signed up for my first class and was hooked ever since. It’s tough to beat the variety and I am never bored. I can honestly say that I have never left a MADabolic session thinking “well, that was easy” and I always walk away with a smile on my face (even while being drenched in sweat with shaking legs). I usually do a routine where I go twice one week then three times the next. I am pretty consistent with this, and it really works for me.

My experience has been awesome, mainly due to the like-minded, judgment free, supportive, and diverse people who frequent MADabolic. I believe that this has been a top-down approach from Brandon and Kirk. They welcome everyone to their gym and are extremely supportive and that is one of the many reasons why they are so successful. I am especially fond of the 5:30am group — these people show up to do one thing – WORK HARD! There is very little morning conversation, nobody cares how they look, and are consistent with their schedules. It’s a beautiful thing!

I used to be an avid triathlete so running, swimming, and biking are my go to activities when I’m not at MADabolic – however, I also never shy away from other activities such as hiking, climbing, skiing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or whatever else I can find. I like to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to new and exciting activities.

Favorite Local Spots:

For coffee my favorite spot is Common Market (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/commonmarketNC). It’s right around the corner from my house so I can be found there multiple times a week. I suppose I need to expand my horizons, but with it being so close and offering so much, it’s tough to break out of my normal routine. Dilworth Coffee (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/DilworthCoffee) is a close second.

I am one of the least persnickety eaters out there and my favorite food is constantly changing, but lately I’ve been on a spicy soup kick. Anything with a spicy clear broth, vegetables, and a lean protein. My guilty pleasure has been Pho and I’ve been getting it from Pho Hoa in Plaza Midwood. It’s a very no frills establishment but the Pho is awesome. Next week, it could be something completely different.

Southend (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/historicsouthend) and Wilmore are my favorite areas of town. Clearly I’m biased since I live there but there is a lot to offer including a variety of cool restaurants and bars, farmers markets, and its location to Uptown. There are a lot of interesting neighborhoods throughout Charlotte, but I really feel at home in Southend.

For drinks, my favorite place is Common Market…again (with all of this free advertisement I should be getting paid by them). I would also say Unknown Brewery (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/unknownbrewing), Tripple C Brewery (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/pages/Triple-C-Brewing-Company/298665250171614), or Good Bottle, Co (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/GoodBottleCo?ref=br_tf)., as well since they are also great places in walking distance for me. Lately I’ve actually been on a small batch bourbon kick and nothing beats sipping some good bourbon with friends in my backyard around the fire pit.

Favorite things to do:

I really like to be outdoors, and active, so given any free time, I would definitely be grabbing my mountain bike, or putting on my running shoes and hitting the trails. I wish I was one of those people who would spend time alone like go to a movie, but truth be told, if I wasn’t doing something outside I’d probably be in my house cleaning or seeing what my friends were up to. The U.S. National Whitewater Center (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/whitewatercenter) is a pretty impressive place and the facilities are constantly improving. With such a variety of activities it’s tough not to have a good time. The trails are always in great shape and it seems like they are constantly putting on events. I particularly enjoy going to the River Jam Concert Series during the summer.

Hiking in Germany (http://madabolic NULL.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Hiking-in-Germany NULL.jpg)

I’m getting old, so some of the best kept local secrets are probably not that secret anymore, but I loved going to the food trucks in Southend on Friday. There are also some really good local restaurants that aren’t overly known about, one in particular is Savor on Morehead Street.

Inspirations, goals + passions:

In general, I am most inspired by people who are always giving back. I think that selfless individuals are some of the happiest people you will ever meet. I have been extremely fortunate to meet a lot of people who are constantly giving back to those around them. I am constantly inspired by seeing this and it motivates me to do the same.

Probably the three things I am most passionate about are my faith, family, and friends. I obviously enjoy many other things but these three keep me grounded, allow me to maintain perspective, and help me to enjoy and pursue other passions.
